In this introduction to our series on identity and artificial intelligence, we ask, ” Who will we become in the age of AI?

We are entering an era where machines are becoming more capable, more autonomous, and more embedded in everyday life.  Artificial intelligence is not simply changing how we work — it is reshaping how we define value, relevance, and even personhood.

Yet before we ask what AI will become, we need to ask something more fundamental: who are we, and who will we become when AI takes over? WillAi become the new culture?

This series on identity does not begin with technology, but it is written under its shadow. It explores culture, memory, belonging, and selfhood at a moment when acceleration is quietly rewriting the conditions of being human. If identity is under pressure, now is the time to understand it — before it is reshaped without our consent.

Our next Podcast series begins with an 8-part exploration of identity, how it is made, changes and how it matters.

“To stay secure in an AI‑and‑quantum world, the UK needs a coordinated national strategy that strengthens quantum and cybersecurity education; expands access to practical training environments; supports early‑career pathways rather than allowing them to shrink.”

Notes

If intelligence, efficiency, and optimisation become the dominant measures of value, then identity itself begins to shift. People may still be “present,” but less central — less needed in ways that once defined who they were. That subtle reordering of relevance is what unsettles me most.
