The book Rogues in Paradise becomes a work of art, with over 100 photos made into digital watercolors. It’s a stunning account of Barbados’ culture and lifestyles, now in creative technicolor. Watercolor book art is becoming a major force in publishing both fiction and nonfiction.

Rogues As Work of Art

The book traces how Barbados became the wealthiest and most strategic of the British colonies, how it was the First Slave Society in the New World, and why its history and people are unlike any other Caribbean island. It is a serious, true saga of Barbados cultural history—from slavery to becoming a republic—showcasing the wit and wisdom of the Bajan people. At times fun and light as it shares stories of the many characters, it is also a serious study of a troubled past and ongoing struggles for reparation and justice.

I will share the new watercolors chapter by chapter over the coming months. One of my beta readers suggested converting my photos into artistic renditions, saying, “Rogues is not a picture book. Art better conveys the spirit of its multi-dimensional saga.” Digital watercolor illustrations are a perfect match for the insightful historical and cultural themes of Rogues in Paradise.

So, I am working on it now.

Several applications were used to optimize the image and create the artistic effect. It took a bit of time and is an ongoing process. Not all images transition well, and some photos will remain in the finished book. The lighter, fun artwork gives a better sense of the book’s character. It aligns with the book’s artistic, whimsical, and culturally rich themes. See the video of the AI avatar and art.

Digitally Converting Photos to Watercolor

  • Ensure the watercolor effect is professionally done, maintaining details without oversimplifying the image.
  • Use specialized watercolor apps like Adobe Photoshop, Canvas, or BeFunky for high-quality conversions.
  • Work with a graphic designer or artist experienced in creating digital watercolor effects if necessary.
  • Experiment with soft, bold, or abstract styles to see what best suits your book’s tone.
  • Incorporate a mix of landscapes, portraits, and key moments to give visual variety.

Why use Art Instead of Photos

  1. Artistic Appeal: Watercolor images add a timeless, artistic quality, making the visuals feel more like curated art pieces rather than straightforward illustrations.
  2. Emphasizes the Whimsical Tone: If your book weaves humor, poetry, and charm, watercolor-style imagery beautifully reinforces that tone.
  3. Cultural Resonance: Watercolors evoke warmth and nostalgia, which, in Rogues’ case, visually engages the vibrant landscapes, people, and history of Barbados.
  4. Consistency with Themes: Watercolors’ fluid, colorful nature mirrors the lyrical and rhythmic writing style described in your Rogues.
  5. Professional Presentation: Stylized illustrations, like watercolors, can elevate the book’s overall aesthetic and give it a polished, high-end feel.
  6. More Memorable—All of the above point to the fact that watercourses have more character and personality than a photograph. They make a bigger impression and stay in the mind longer.

By the way,
you can convert portraits of people to watercolors.
It works but may require fine-tuning.

It may not always be flattering,
but it contributes to the artistry
for all the reasons noted above.

In closing, let me say that Watercolour Art is personal.
It complements any personal journey or memoir, adding a unique touch and expression.
As in Rogues Caribbean Island Memories
and Rogue in Paradises  Barbados memoir and travelogue
